Piazza San Pietro
Mon Dec 04, 2017 1:29 pmWe visited St. Peter's Square in Vatican City.
Facing St Peter’s Basilica, the largest Church in Christendom, St. Peter’s Square, designed by Bernini who is the first name in Baroque Rome, is ringed by 284 Doric Columns.
The Obelisk comes from Nero’s Circus, where Christians were martyred, and originally from Alexandria. The Christmas Tree is much finer than that belonging to the City of Rome.
Nero’s Circus was actually built by Emperor Caligula, who tragically fell into depravity and insanity, and was assassinated.
In the background, rising above the Colonnade on the right half of this image is Vatican Palace, which contain Vatican Museums. The structure on the left with the antenna is Sistine Chapel.
