Giotto's Campanile
Tue Nov 28, 2017 8:30 amWe climbed to the top of Giotto's Campanile (Bell Tower) to admire the views.
Giotto’s Campanile rises almost but not quite as high, as Brunelleschi’s Dome.
Looking North you can see the dome atop Medici Chapel, which is attached to Basilica di San Lorenzo.
Florence Train Station is also visible.
From the extreme South End of Uffizi Gallery, the most prestigious art gallery in Florence, looking up Piazzale degli Uffizi at Palazzo Vecchio, Florence’s Town Hall which was built in 1299.
Savonarola, Machiavelli, and Cosimo de’ Medici The Elder all had the honor of being imprisoned in the tower.
From here you can also view Ponte Vecchio, a covered bridge filled with shops, across the Arno River.
The top deck of the bridge, the Vasari Corridor is an enclosed passage built for the de’ Medici family in 1565, so they could move secretly about the city.
The Vasari Corridor also connects to Uffizi, which historically was a building for city offices.
