Vysehrad
Sat May 12, 2018 10:49 amTo the South, overlooking Vltava River, Fort Vysehrad is Prague's "other castle".
Bohemian and Czech history is dominated by foreign empires, but Vyšehrad is more relevant to the native Czech and Bohemian Nations, than is the newer Prague Castle.
Vyšehrad was built in the 10th Century. But many stuctures within are Baroque.
Let’s try to articulate why Leopold’s Gate is Baroque, aside from it’s 17th Century provenance. Not unlike Rennaissance Architecture, there is an attempt to evoke the arches and columns of Classical Rome and Greece. But Rennaissance Architecture doesn’t have curves like this.
St. Martin’s Rotunda is a Romanesque Church that was build in the 11th Century (maybe). Romanesque architucture is an attempt to evoke the arches and columns of Classical Antiquity, but with much less fine materials and methods. No polished marble facade here. Semi-circular arches are another feature.
This is an awkward angle of light for us facing North; you are looking South towards Vltava River.
Now you are looking West.
Same view as above, now zoomed in.
